  1. The picture of the Italian mother and her baby resonates with me because it shows a family living in poverty and living in a dirty house. The photograph shows that poor families had to live in dirty and unsafe conditions, starting from when they were born.

  2. The photograph I picked was picture nine. The photograph of the six men is kind of disturbing because there so crowded into a tight space as there bedroom. It shows us what the tenements are like in the period.

  3. I picked the photo of the homeless boys. I chose it because it shows how many children in the slums lived on their own because their parents were probably dead. This shows that many kids lived off of the streets on their own during this period without adults taking care of them, they struggled through life on their own.

  4. I picked photo number 12. The photo clearly shows how poor people could be in times like. He was so poor he was sleeping on barrels in a basement.

  5. Picture 9. The picture shows how close they were to each other and just how close there living conditions were to each other. In the picture it looks like there is 6-7 people in a area that we would consider enough for one or two tops. Also in that area there is all of the things they need, shoes, pots and pans, and some other random accessories. We have so much more space than they even had close to back in the day. -Parker Dewitt

  6. I chose the 9 th photo of the family all scrunched into a tiny apartment. I picked this one because it really stood out as showing how much space they actually had. This picture shows that in this time they had no room to eat, sleep or even move. It also shows how filthy it was in those place you can see that there is just a coat of soot over everything and they have to breath that in.

  7. "The photo I found the most interesting was the "Baby's Playground." The state that the building the child was in was absolutely atrocious. It seemed like the kind of place no grown man should be living in, let alone a small child. I think that this photograph highlights both the poor conditions of housing for immigrants in the early 1900's, as well as the varying ages of occupants in said housing during this time.

  8. The post titled 'Street Arabs' is the one the hit me the most. Those boys looked to be about my age or a little bit younger. It made me imagine what my life would be like if I had to live and sleep out on the streets. The areas where they slept were filthy; I wouldn't be able to do it. This photograph show how poor families were and how unsanitary conditions were. These boys were homeless in their early teens, meaning that either their parents were dead (likely from disease) or that they simply didn't have enough money to raise their children.

  9. The "5 Cents a Spot" photo really spoke to me because it shows all of these men living in a cramped little space. The space they are staying is filthy and the people living there are healthy. It shows just how poor people were, and how bad the living conditions were in these tenements. -Emily Hughson

  10. I picked the photo with the Italian mother and her baby. I picked this photo because just by looking at the picture I can see that the mother looks upset and like she wants something better in life for her child to live in. It looks like she does not want her child to grow up the way she did. I can tell just by looking at the picture that the places that they live we're filthy and unsanitary. I can also tell that there is very limited space and really crowded. The living conditions look so crowded that it is unsafe. It also looks like the place is so filthy that it is unclean able.

  12. My favorite picture is the ninth one. This picture features at least 6 people crowded into one room of what I assume is a tenement. I picked it because it strongly reflects on what a crowded and cramped lifestyle many people had during this time period. They were stuck together in a small dirty environment. This photo shows that people during this time were willing to endure a lot in order to make a living.

  13. I chose the 9th photo because it showed how cramped the living space was for that family. There was barely any space for a lot of people to live in. The bed that the man was sitting on looked very small and uncomfortable. The house also looked really dirty and rundown. Most people couldn't imagine living like that.

  14. I picked the photo with around six people in it all in make-shift beds in what looks like the kitchen. I picked it because it shows that a lot of people were crammed into small spaces. It also shows how all of their stuff had to be stored in a small amounts of space. There was not enough room for that many people and all of the stuff they needed. How low on space do you have to be to make your kitchen into a bedroom too? Lizzie

  15. I picked the Street Arabs picture, the one with the three kids asleep against a wooden barrel. I picked this photo because these kids pretty much represent the the hundreds and thousands of orphans during this time and how they must have felt like with no family's and know place to go.

  16. The picture I chose was the one with three boys all together laying on each other by the bucket. I chose this because it really made me feel bad for them because of the sad expressions on the faces. It shows you how hard and depressing it was for them and what they had to live through.

  17. I picked the picture of the man in the cellar. No human being should ever have to live In those types of conditions. Living in a cellar exposes you to many more diseases, and horrible ventilation. A this period in history men who had jobs in the city had to find a place for shelter. Even the cellars became an option for some men, and the cellars is not a place where anyone wants to live, ever.

  18. I chose the picture of the family who was sleeping or at least trying to. The picture shows just how small their living space actually was. Also, if you look closely you can see how dirty the room is. I think this picture does a good job at showing how poor the living conditions were at this time in history for immigrants.

  19. I chose the 8th picture that was on the slides how because it shows a large family of about 7 living in a very small tenement in a very populated area. Also, there are many things laying on the floor and it also seems as there is a ton of dirt around the tenement. The purpose of the photo is to let people know and figure out what life in the slums was like back in the 1900's and how condensed and cluttered it was.

  20. I picked the 9th one because it shows how bad the rooms were crowded and how dirty they were, and it made me realize how bad they were and what kind of horrible conditions they had to live in

  21. The picture that I chose was the first one because of the vast amount of subjects covered in the picture. One being how overcrowded it is. You can see the ten plus people posing for the picture in an alley. Another is how dirty it is. You can see all the trash and barrels littering the streets and alley.
